Where My Love Grows

Mother’s Day Makeover Project Mother from 2024

Angela Landreville

Introducing Angela, the heart and soul of our Mother’s Day Makeover Project for 2024! Angela’s journey is one of immense love and resilience, deeply intertwined with the trials and triumphs of her family. A devoted mother to two incredible daughters, Angela has faced profound challenges with unwavering grace. After enduring two heartbreaking miscarriages, Angela welcomed her second daughter Ava into the world, only to confront the daunting reality of Ava’s congenital heart defect, which required numerous surgeries and countless days at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Tragically, in June 2017, Angela lost her beloved husband Jeff, leaving her to navigate the complexities of grief and loss while caring for their daughters, then 17 and 12. Despite the pain of their separation, Angela still carries love and longing for Jeff in her heart every day, grappling with feelings of guilt amidst her profound grief.

As if her plate wasn’t full enough, Angela now faces the devastating news of her father’s stage 4 terminal cancer diagnosis. Yet, through every hardship, Angela remains a beacon of strength and kindness, embodying resilience in the face of adversity.

Angela’s daughters, deeply inspired by their mother’s selflessness and courage, nominated her for this makeover, eager to give back a fraction of the love and support she has poured into their lives. For the past seven years, Angela has sacrificed her own comfort, giving her master bedroom to her daughter Emma after Jeff’s passing, while she herself has made do with a makeshift space lacking proper storage and comfort.

Now, as her daughters prepare to embark on their own journeys, Angela is finally receiving the recognition she deserves.

How the design process worked

Enter Jenny from Green Stone Contracting and Design and yours truly! On April 5, we surprised Angela at her home with the news of a free bedroom makeover. Excited, nervous, and probably wondering if she was on a hidden camera show, Angela welcomed us into her bedroom-turned-campground. Armed with measurements and a Pinterest dream board (yes, Pinterest is basically a designer’s magic wand), we began brainstorming.

Angela, a control enthusiast, initially struggled to let go. But after a heart-to-heart, she trusted us, and that's when the real magic began. We crafted a mood board and enlisted her daughters to help make the big decisions, ensuring the final design would be something Angela would love. Next, it was time to rally the troops. We reached out to our amazing sponsors and volunteers, coordinating everything in only a few weeks was a little chaotic. But, thanks to our incredible community, everything was set for April 26, the day we kicked off the transformation. Angela and her daughters were banned from the bedroom—a total surprise makeover in the making!

The week of the makeover saw a few hiccups, like the king-size bed arriving fashionably late on Friday afternoon and new doors being installed moments before the big reveal. But come May 4, the masterpiece was ready, and it was time for the grand unveiling.

With Angela, Emma, and Ava’s eyes closed, we led them into their new sanctuary. When they opened their eyes, the room—now an elegant, peaceful retreat filled with personal touches—left them speechless. Angela finally has a space to unwind after a long day, and her daughters are over the moon with this gift they could have never given her on their own.

But wait, there's more! Along with the bedroom makeover, Free Flow Plumbing and Mechanical installed two new toilets (because every queen deserves a throne) and Sutherland Carpentry gifted Angela a $750 card to continue her home renovations, which had been put on hold since Jeff’s passing.

A massive thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers who made this year’s Mother’s Day Makeover Project a smashing success. Check out the reveal video on Where My Love Grows Instagram or Facebook pages, and don't forget to support these incredible local businesses for your next project!
