Kids Bedroom Makeover
When we found out we were expecting our third child, we knew that William and Alice would have to share a room. My wheels instantly started turning. I wanted to create a room that they both loved; a space they could escape to that also flowed nicely together with plenty of storage. I started with finding the right beds that would fit in the room with the option to turn them into bunk beds when the kids got older. Being only 4 and 2 when we moved them into this room, I didn’t feel they were ready for bunk beds just yet. William’s only request was to have an orange bed. I knew I needed to make that happen. With a tight budget, I found beds at IKEA that met all our requirements for a great price. The best part is I didn't have to wait 6 weeks for them (like most all other stores)! While at IKEA I was also able to find my inspiration for the rest of the room. It started with a colorful geomatical rug that had both the kids’ favorite colors and more. I also found bedding that matched their personalities perfectly. With the bedding and rug selected, I was inspired to add a geometric design to their wall. After playing with triangles and colors, we came up with this design that injected a fun vibe to the room.
To give William his only request, I painted his headboard and footboard orange using fusion paint. To make Alice happy as well, I painted her bed a light pink with the chalk paint I had left over from when I did her room originally. Next issue was to tackle the storage situation. I had my old IKEA night stand from college and surprisingly enough they still sell the same one, so we picked one more up. The two nightstands fit perfectly between the beds so they could each have their own drawers. My old night stand had a sticker on it that took off some of the finish when I removed it. I wasn’t worried; I knew I could fix this with a little paint. With a geometric design in mind, I added a fun little pattern to the front of the drawers using frog tape, fusion paint for the red and existing yellow chalk paint I already had for the other. I love how that matched together. I also knew I needed to make better use of the closet space. I was able to find a second-hand dresser that fit in the closet and gave each kid 3 drawers for plenty of storage. With a fresh coat of paint and new hardware, I brought it back to life and gave the closet organization. To save on cost from buying a new bookshelf, I moved the white storage cubby out and used it as their bookshelf.
I was able to completely transform this room in a weekend with the help of my two girlfriends. But that wouldn’t have been possible to do without having the furniture pieces painted ahead of time. I would spend my evenings in the basement after the kids went to bed painting the pieces so they were ready to go when it was makeover time. I just loved seeing how all the pieces came together perfectly to create this fun room for my kids.
